Foiling - Lesson 4B - Different Materials - Revision of Hotfoil stamps and Thin Metal Dies

Today's session uses two techniques that we have already looked at to foil onto other materials.
The thin metal dies and Hotfoil stamps can also be used to foil onto ribbon and other fabrics or items such as organza bags and acetate bags. The requirements are the same (plus, of course, your ribbon or bag). Couture Creations also suggest that thin leather and other textiles (such as calico) can also be foiled.

On these materials, the Hotfoil stamps give a much more defined foiled area than the metal dies.

For the Thin Metal Dies - remember that this technique only imprints the cutting parts of the die onto your material - giving a fine outline.

You will need:

Acetate bag foiled with
thin metal die.

• your GoPress & Foil machine - plugged in and waiting - plus the knobbly silicone protective mat and tweezers 
• a die-cutting machine 
• GoPress foil  (and sharp scissors to cut the foil).
• a thin cutting die
• ribbon (or organza bag or acetate bag - * see note below the Hotfoil information before using these)
• several pieces of shim
• Optional but useful - an adhesive eraser

What to do:

• start your GOPress heating - aiming for that green light
• cut your foil to size
• lay the thin metal die, cutting side up on the heating platform
• lay the foil, pretty side down, onto the metal die
• lay your ribbon, good side down, onto the foil (or your bag, with thin card inside it)
• add  your 2 pieces of shim (you should by now know which shim to use for this process)
• close the platform and allow layers to heat (green light plus 15 seconds)
• transfer platform to die-cutting machine and roll through SLOWLY
• rest the platform back in the GoPress (not heating), allow to cool slightly then peel backing from image.

onto areas outside the die.

has taken off most of the excess foil.

I have added wording pressed on using a chipboard piece
as described in Lesson 2A, just to show that you can!

For the Hotfoil stamps:

You will need:

• GoPress & Foil machine - plugged in and waiting - plus knobbly silicone protective mat and tweezers 
• your die-cutting machine without any platform or plates
• GoPress foil  (and sharp scissors to cut the foil). 
• a Hotfoil stamp (and maybe a Bandaid - remember the warning)
• a piece of ribbon
• piece/s of shim -as described in Lesson 1 - but you know that, don't you
• Optional but useful - an adhesive eraser

What to do:

• start your GOPress heating - wait until the flashing light turns green

• cut your foil to size

• lay the Hotfoil stamp with detailed side up on the heating platform
• lay the foil, pretty side down, onto the Hotfoil stamp
• lay your ribbon, good side down, onto the foil
• add a shim (you should by now know which shim to use for this process)
• close the platform and allow layers to heat (green light plus 15 seconds)
• transfer platform to die-cutting machine and roll through SLOWLY
• rest the platform back in the GoPress (not heating), allow to cool slightly then peel backing from image.

I used one shim too many - should have used only 2 thin
layers of card. See all the excess bits outside the lines.

I can see that the foil is well bonded
onto the ribbon.

Never fear - the trusty adhesive eraser
has taken care of all those bits.

* Note - These processes are exactly the same for organza and acetate bags, BUT work best if you put a very thin piece of card inside the bag before foiling, You may need to reduce the thickness of your shim to compensate for this.


You can also use the technique for Lesson 2A using the chipboard words to foil onto acetate, and presumably fabric.
